Research Use Only: The RUO Framework

What “research use only” means in the United States, and the line it draws.

Research Use Only is a regulatory category, not a slogan. It describes materials supplied for laboratory investigation that have not been evaluated or approved for use in humans or animals. Understanding the category is part of sourcing responsibly.

What RUO means

An RUO material is sold for in-vitro research. It is not a drug, not a supplement, and not a medical device. It carries no approved indication, no dosing, and no claim of safety or efficacy for any use in a person or animal — because it has not been through the process that would establish any of those things.

The line RUO draws

  • RUO materials are for qualified researchers conducting in-vitro work.
  • They are not for human or veterinary use, diagnosis, or treatment.
  • No statement about an RUO compound may present it as safe or effective for use in a person.
  • A supplier's role is to characterize what it ships — identity, purity, content — not to advise on use.

None of this is legal advice. Regulatory classification is fact-specific and changes; a researcher or institution is responsible for the rules that apply to their own work.

This material is synthesized from publicly available preclinical literature and industry documentation for qualified laboratory researchers. It is not medical, veterinary, therapeutic, or diagnostic advice. All compounds are supplied and discussed solely for in-vitro laboratory research and are not for human or animal use.
